約翰.丹佛1943年生於美國西南部的新墨西哥州，從小喜愛音樂，顯露出良好的音樂素質。8歲時祖母送他一把吉他，開始學習音樂。青年時代在大學攻讀建築設計專業，他與1971年放棄學業，一心從事鄉村歌曲的創作和演唱，當年即以演唱歌頌佛吉尼亞山區美麗風光的《故鄉的路》（Countryroad）一舉成名。


美國鄉村音樂巨星約翰丹佛寫過多首經典名曲，其中有多首情歌均是為其妻子安妮而寫。如 Annie’s song等。

由於當局一向視西方的搖滾樂為毒蛇猛獸，只有鄉村音樂可以放行入關，約翰丹佛因而成了第一位到中國大陸開演唱會的美國歌星。這首「上海微風」便是約翰丹佛到上海獻唱，於當地參觀之後有感而發所寫下的。從歌詞看來，很明顯的這也是一首獻給妻子的歌。

1997年10月12日，他在飛機失事中喪生，年僅53歲。
