2. you raise me up

Started life as a duo air still, Figments of a familiar Irish tune swung in every into the melody. We tried to handle the lyrics but it would not give away. Maybe it sounded a different life-form… and so, we decided to pursue the idea of adding lyrics and asked Irish writer Brendan Graham to listen to it. His books «The Whittest Flower» and «The Element of Fire» – two best-selling novels about the life of Ellen Rao O’Malley during the Irish famine, had inspired us strongly. He immediately began to share a story—in the melody and by that time evenings led adapted the first draft of your raise me up. The unaccompanied violin opening is Romania’s first and untouched guide recording for the original demo, while Ullianna piped grand master, Liam O’Eyana carries the tune through its middle course. The subtly singing of Brian Kennedy and Tracy Campbell-Nelson, together with the London Community Gospel Chair and Irish choral group, Alastia, gives full expression to the deep spiritual longing within the lyric.

awakening 觉醒

An acoustic invitation to step within the walls of the Secret Garden. First recorded with solo piano and violin, this piece was later brush-stroked with some traditional Norwegian colour, in a reflective orchestral treatment by Steven Mercurio. Åsa Jindar's keyharp and Hans Fredrik Jacobsen's willow-askable further add to the emerging musical landscape. The music was inspired by Kate Chopin's late nineth-century novel of the same name, which about the emotional awakening of Edna - the main character - and the gradual realization of her own identity.

silent wings 寂静之翼

In its original day this piece was a fusion of jazzy melodic lines and high-energy rhythms. But when we invited Kjetil Bjerkentund to co-arrange it, he heard in it quite a different mood. He amplified it by stripping it down layer by layer. And by simplifying it, managed to uncover a newfound ethereal quality – a bird soaring through the air, borne aloft by the tailwind – on silent wings. Simon Enes, who has performed with us for a long time, brings the  melodic lines to life. His oboe engages in a musical dialogue with the strings. Simon is currently principal oboe player with the Malaysian Symphony Orchestra.

greenwaves 绿浪

Each one of us has a 'meadow that cradles the heart'. Sometimes that meadow carries with it the voice of ancient echoes and half-remembered tones... and dances all through the years. American songwriter and singer, Ann Hampton Callaway wrote the lyrics to greenwaves. We had previously collaborated with her, co-authoring Barbara Streisand's wedding song - «I've dreamed of you». The natural vocal beauty of Scottish singer Karen Matheson can instantly capture the heart, as it did when she performed the anthem in the film, «Rob Roy», causing actor Liam Neeson to declare, «Her voice is touched by God!».

We came across a chapter in a book where, in 1674, the English journalist Edward Head describes his first experience of Irish traditional music. He writes: «In every field a fiddle, and the lasses footing it, till they are all of a foam!».
Feverish and happy, the melody here flings its way through the rhythmically driven arrangement, inviting the listener to join in the revelry. This Norwegian-inspired tune undergoes a joyful metamorphosis and ends in an energetic jazz funk. Bjørn Orla Roach co-arranged Invitation, adding bright new colours and unleashing its innate energy.

The classically inspired theme was originally written as a violin piece. During the arrangement process, we conceived the idea of transforming the melody into a musical dialogue between two instruments. We were honored when English cellist Julian Lloyd Webber accepted our recording invitation. Cello and violin become two voices sharing emotions, adding new dimensions to the duet. Conductor Steven Mercurio's orchestration creates an empathetic musical backdrop for this instrumental conversation.

belonging 归途

In both Norway and Ireland, connection to the elemental is a strong part of our heritage. This is the inspiration for this pastoral melody, where the polarity between Irish uilleann pipes and Arabic oud played by Åsa Juntar, represents the differing landscapes that embrace us; making us one with them; giving us our sense of place and belonging. Co-arranger, Kjetil Bjerkestrand, used an old pedal Harmonium which, with all of its squeaks and noises, reminds us of the natural and organic sounds from the places where we most belong.

All our music is written as instrumental pieces, but some melodies naturally yearn for words. This piece was originally arranged as a solo flute work, but gradually transformed into a vocal song. Brendan Graham's poetic imagery and Karen Matheson's vocals (recorded in Capercaillie's Glasgow studio) transport us to the threshold of daybreak, where we're filled with wonder and spiritually elevated beyond mundane existence. The sparse opening, with its solitary, plaintive melody, contrasts with the ethereal choral interlude performed by Anúna.

In this story without words, the two of us - together in duet - try to capture that intimate feeling which is the essence of our music. It was the sound of the violin accompanied by the piano that first led us into our Secret Garden. It is the communication and sharing of emotions that gives life to all music, and Steven Mercurio's emotive orchestration of The Promise invests this communion with simplicity and warmth.

fairytale 童话

A congregation of creatures, fairies dancing in ritual energy, the secret life of the light, all conjure up images of musical fantasy. The story-telling style of the medieval ballads is the model for this track, and the traditional song of the troubadour is freely translated into an instrumental fairytale in our own style. The creative ideas of co-arranger Bjørn Ole Rasch, and the orchestration by Johnny Tate, magically paint the otherworldly canvas for this "dance fantastique".

once in a red moon 红月奇遇

We always felt this piece transports us to a nocturnal Spanish ambiance. The melody opens with John Finucane's oboe, accompanied by Spanish guitar. It then pulses through the orchestra in ever-shifting moods - from tranquility to passion; the blood-red moon rising; the heart at rest. Steven Mercurio's multi-layered orchestration weaves a rich tapestry of Mediterranean colors.

Inspired by a Dublin concert with Anúna, this elegy was the final composition for the album. The melody revolves around a sustained drone. To Anúna's pure choral tones are added pleas for mercy and peace: Miserere nobis, dona nobis pacem. Through our website we invited global participation by submitting piano C-chords. We received 66 distinct recordings - on DATs, MiniDiscs, CDs and WAV files from around the world. In Elegie's fading chords, these pianos blend into a universal sonic energy.
