故事背景设定在20世纪50年代僻静的家乡小镇，讲述马特·达蒙扮演的中年男子遭遇妻子在家中被杀害，由此宁静的生活被打破，引发出一连串勒索、骗保、偷情事件。而对面邻居搬来了一家黑人，又因此打破了整个小镇的宁静。家庭危机和小镇危机交织在一起，组成《迷镇凶案》的精彩故事。影片延续了科恩兄弟作品一贯的黑色幽默风格，乔治·克鲁尼对50年代的喜爱也在片中有所表现，导演和编剧用幽默诙谐的方式，揭露出普通人身上人性中最好与最坏的一面。
