Ron Clearfield follows in the footsteps of David Darling in creating a
contemporary chamber music centered on the cello. While on record Darling is
the Lord of Largo, Clearfield has a more dynamic approach, using broad keyboard
orchestrations and multitracked cello choirs. The title track is a symphony in
miniature, as Clearfield moves from Gregorian-like chants to a baroque keyboard
cadenza and swirling cello orchestra. He goes solo on a couple of pieces,
including the muscular "Etude de Lumiere" and "Nana." Other tracks, such as
"Baqti" and "Prelude to an Enchanted River," incorporate African mbira, bamboo
flute, and zither, giving his music a more global, earthy feel. And he needs
it. Clearfield has a tendency toward bombast and sentimentality, which emerges
on the album closer, "The Journey," with its full orchestra. But his
electrified cello textures, world elements, and an unerring sense of melody
usually keep Clearfield in check. --John Diliberto
