專輯介紹
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings will mark the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War with 'A Treasury of Civil War Songs,' a collection of wartime anthems that resonate with cultural and historical significance.
Originally released in 1973 by mid-20th century folk icon Tom Glazer (1914-2003), 'A Treasury of Civil War Songs' revisits 25 of the Civil War's most memorable musical artifacts, including the Confederate's foremost rally cry, "Dixie," and George Frederick Root's iconic "The Battle Cry of Freedom."
Glazer's 'A Treasury of Civil War Songs' consists of a remarkably rich variety. Glazer recorded borrowed songs with melodies originally conceived for other recordings ("John Brown's Body"), revitalized compositions from professional songwriters ("Tramp, Tramp, Tramp"), hemmed songs of humor ("Goober Peas"), and captured the political angst of Civil War songwriters ("We are Coming Father Abram"), assembling a diverse array of voices that truly embraces the spirit of the era.
This reissue of 'A Treasury of Civil War Songs' includes comprehensive liner notes by University of Maryland Assistant Professor of Musicology Patrick Warfield that provide detailed information on each song in the context of wartime. Glazer's original notes are included as well, focusing as much on the songs' histories as on why he chose to share them. The extensive notes also feature historical photographs depicting the Civil War musicians who originally would have written and performed these songs.
Tom Glazer, known to most as a children's musician and composer of the 1963 hit "On Top of Spaghetti," worked for Alan Lomax at the Library of Congress early in his career and for decades played a strong role in the New York City folk scene. His songs have been recorded by Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra and others.
Glazer's 2008 Smithsonian Folkways reissue, "Tom Glazer Sings Honk-Hiss-Tweet-GGGGGGGGGG and Other Children's Favorites," earned an Independent Music Awards nomination for Best Children's Album. Glazer also recorded for Folkways Records' Moses Asch in the 1950s, appearing with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Cisco Houston, and others on the 1951 album "Lonesome Valley - A Collection of American Folk Music" and the 1961 release "Songs of the Spanish Civil War, Vol. 1." top40-charts.com
