As one of only a handful of female singers on the British Asian music scene, the fact that Veronica remains a recording artist after nearly 10 years in the business is an achievement in itself. But is survival enough of a reason to applaud a performer? Surely an established artist should be able to offer their fans something fresh and exciting every once in a while.
Sadly, fresh and exciting are two adjectives that cannot be used to describe Veronica’s latest album, Rush. It may offer a set of 11 brand-new songs, but in terms of sound it’s old hat. The staleness is less to do with Veronica’s vocals and more to do with her long-time collaborator Rishi Rich. As the producer and creative brains behind Rush, it’s his lack of imagination that makes Veronica’s latest effort simmer instead of sizzle.
Rich’s reliance on standard bhangra and RnB beats reflects in everything from the opening to closing numbers. Mediocre at best, poor Veronica’s wispy vocals struggle to dominate the overpowering rhythms in most of the songs. She is overwhelmed in solo numbers like Addicted and Pehla Pyar, and sounds dated in Gal Sun, a number straight out of the Rishi Rich/Jay Sean/Juggy D days of old-school urban bhangra.
Even collaborations with Hunterz, on Manja Soniya and Meri Jaan, and a hook-up with east London MC Mumzy fail to give Veronica a lift. It’s only in the catchy title-track that Rich allows her to create any sort of impact of her own.
A contemporary update on the Nazia Hassan 80s classic, Disco Diwane, should have been an ideal number for Veronica. Instead it falls flat as the songstress fails to give it an inventive twist. M.I.A.’s sassy update of Bappi Lahiri’s Jimmy from the film Disco Dancer is a prime example of how to reinvent and add a personal signature to a desi classic. Rich, take note.
Sounding all a bit samey, you get the feeling that Veronica has been left saddled with a collection of songs that may have been intended for a Bollywood soundtrack or Indi-pop album, but unfortunately rejected. Rich may have remixed pop icons like Britney and Craig David, and helped launch the careers of Jay Sean, Juggy D and H Dhami, but with Veronica he has missed a trick.
