The music was written by Gilbert Bécaud, the original French lyrics (title: "Seul Sur Son Étoile") by Maurice Vidalin with new English lyrics (and a new English title) by Mack David. The song was published in 1967. The best-selling version was recorded that year by Vikki Carr, which reached #3 on the U.S. pop chart and spent three weeks at #1 on the contemporary chart. The single also peaked at #2 in both the United Kingdom and Australia. Carr went on to record it in Spanish and Italian, as well.
Shirley Bassey recorded the song on her 1967 album And We Were Lovers.
Celebrity fashion designer Michael Plosky used this song as the inspiration for his 1999 fall collection "Vicki Carr and Me: A Love Story"
