Santa Rosa-born guitarist Julian Lage, the subject of the documentary "Jules at Eight"
and a former student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Ali Akbar College
of Music, has grown up with the release of this exquisite debut CD. Now studying at
Boston's Berklee College of Music, Lage demonstrates a jaw-dropping stylistic range
and thrilling technique on the 14 cuts. Call it "jazz" if you need a label, but sit
back and listen as he glides from the blues ache in "All Blues" to the bluegrass
bounce in Elliott Smith's "Alameda," to the straight-ahead jazz of his "Clarity"
from Gary Burton's 2005 album "Next Generation." Taylor Eigsti guests on "Tour One"
as well as on "All Blues." Lage hits Yoshi's and the Healdsburg Jazz Festival later
this spring. Don't miss him.
