Barry Manilow不仅仅是一位伟大的歌手，他也曾创作数百歌曲，是真正的Singer-song writer。在他年仅七岁时，就已注定会成为一位音乐家。不仅仅去接受正规的音乐教育，还借邻居的钢琴来练琴。而其后更在音乐学院学习，靠在CBS电视台的邮件收发室打工帮补学费。而年仅18岁的他，由于在CBS打工，监制让他写首歌在一个节目中播。歌曲的成功，使他成为CBS的本地电视剧的音乐监制，也作为一位阁楼俱乐部的歌手。1972年，他遇见Bette Midler，并为她做音乐监制、编曲和钢琴演奏部分。而他辅助制作的Bette Midler首张获格莱美奖及其后的Bette Midler的第二张白金唱片，又开启了他的处女独唱的机会。而他的一首Mandy更加是一鸣惊人，位于音乐榜连续25周的40强以内。最经典的是，1981～1982年间，他举行世界巡回演唱会的时候，到了伦敦，更是有多达300名警察在机场把守，在当时，直可媲美于猫王Elvis Presley和The Beatles了。而在伦敦演出的时候，更录制了演唱会专辑Barry Manilow - Live In Britain，发行的首周即创下销量榜首位置。而在其后几个月后，在英国更是获得三白金的销量，超越了当时发行唱片的The Beatles。
