"Nuevo flamenco" or new flamenco was the name given during the 1980’s to a younger generation of flamenco artists influenced by other cont emporary and traditional musics. Jazz in particular, but also rock an d pop music as well as the south american mix of salsa and rumbas hav e contributed to this creeping fusion. Ironically groups such as the Gypsy Kings actually helped to bring progressive and traditional flam enco to a wider audience. During the 90’s and in part due to the comm ercial success of some of these artists, a lot of young gypsies follo wed the steps of these bands. Look out for Ray Heredia, Ketama, Tomas ito, Maita Vende Cá, La Barbería del Sur, Pata Negra, José el Francés Navajita Plateá, La Macanita, Raimundo Amador, Joaquín Cortés, Ni?a Pastori, Jeronimo to name but a few.......
Traditional or purist flamenco has its protagonists too. All artists generally agree on the importance of preserving the roots, but the fo rms which artists like to identify for their music may well differ gr eatly. Both young and older performers tread the traditional route.
