      佛汉•威廉斯是英国作曲家、著作家和指挥家。他在1872年10月12日生于英国格洛斯特郡(Gloucestershire)的下安普内(Down Ampney)，父亲是当地的一个教区牧师。六岁起威廉斯在他的姨妈指导下学习音乐，七岁开始学小提琴.在查特豪斯(Charterhouse)学校读书时，他是学校乐队的小提琴手，在剑桥进三一学校后，他开始学习作曲。1890年夏，沃恩•威廉斯来到了慕尼黑，在这里他聆听了瓦格纳的乐剧《女武神》，从而更加坚定了他早已立下的志愿——当一名作曲家。回国后，沃恩•威廉斯进了皇家音乐学院学习和声与作曲；1897年，他来到柏林，拜M.布鲁赫为师，1909年又到巴黎求教于拉威尔。在这求学期间，他先尝试着写了一些歌曲，不久后便投入大型乐曲的创作。
      沃恩威廉斯写过几乎所有形式的音乐：九首交响曲钢琴、小提琴，甚至竖笛协奏曲、弥撒曲、歌剧等等。其他代表作有如歌剧《赶车人休格》、《恋爱中的约翰爵士》、管弦乐《三首诺尔福特狂想曲》、《蜂序曲》、《塔里斯主题幻想曲》和九部交响曲等。他的创作奠定了英国现代民族音乐的基础。此外，最脍炙人口短曲为小提琴与乐团而写的浪漫曲《云雀飞翔》(The Lark Ascending)及《绿袖子幻想曲》(Fanitaia on Greensleeves)。
