"Telemann, indeed, should be more liked and understood than he is. When he is on the sort of sparkling form he displays in works such as the Alster Overture and the Burlesque de Don Quichotte, he is irresistible. ...In none of it does Telemann make an ugly sound or exceed the bounds of the best 18th-century taste...The same goes for these performances by one of the world's top baroque orchestras, exemplary in every way from their generous but clear-voiced sound to their nicely judged responses to the music's many details, neither perfunctory nor grotesquely over-characterised. A perfect Telemann release." - Lindsay Kemp, GRAMOPHONE Keen, insightful interpretations of the music of the Baroque he earned Tafelmusik a reputation as one of the world's premier period instrument ensembles. Performances and recordings by the group, led by violinist Jeanne Lamon, are highly regarded for their intelligence, refinement, and vitality. This disc finds Lamon and Tafelmusik devoting their musical skills to the programmatic music of three of Telemann's orchestral suites. First up is the "Alster" Overture, a depiction of the fanciful happenings on the banks of the Alster River and the various creatures who inhabit this realm. The group treads lightly through this landscape representing sounds and images ranging from the serene elegance of a swan to the cacophony of frogs and crows. Next is 'Burlesque de Don Quixotte,' a lighthearted account of the misguided hero's adventures set as a suite for strings including the vigorous attack on the windmills and the mishaps of Sancho Panza. Last is "La Bourse," Telemann's account of the turbulent financial climate of early 18th-century Europe. Turmoil, tension, and, finally, hopeful optimism are well evidenced in this reading. All of the musical scenarios included on this disc are rendered in typically excellent fashion by Lamon and Tafelmusik, demonstrating their expertise and intimate knowledge of this music.
