Message from the Artist
The harp is one of the most beautiful and versatile musical instruments. Every culture and age has produced its own version giving a rich diversity of sound and style. My aim, through my music, is to illustrate the wonder of this instrument. On my albums "Romantic Harp" and "Classical Harp" for example, I play a full sized concert harp to produce a lush and romantic classical sound. But for contrast "Medieval Harp" features a wire strung harp with a more percussive sound, and the "Celtic Christmas Harp" album a Clarsach or Irish harp, which is gentle and traditional. My album "Homage" was dedicated to Tansen, the greatest musician of the 16th century court of the Indian King Akabar. For this I went many times to India to find an authentic Indian harp called the Santoor. This harp, played with wooden hammers, and combined with the sitar and Indian flute illustrates the amazing diversity of the harp, compared with any of the other albums.
Most recently I was inspired by the Chinese Harp - known as a Cheng - which led me to produce my "Silk and Bamboo" album. For this I combined the melody of the Chinese and Western harp with the beautiful bamboo flute playing of Tim Wheater, to conjure up the mystical quality of ancient China. On the album I mixed the sounds of modern and ancient instruments to produce a new and fascinating oriental blend of music.
I am currently working on music from South America, this time featuring the unusual sound of the Peruvian Harp and many other ethnic instruments from the region. This album will combine the Spanish feel of South American music with the 'other worldliness' of the High Andes and Inca sites. These have a magical atmosphere of quiet contemplation, which I hope will be conveyed through my music to leave listeners with a feeling of inner peace and calm.
