說到Don Henley有些人或許會感到陌生，但一提起他所屬的樂團The Eagles（老鷹合唱團）便不得不豎起大拇指嘖嘖稱道這組美國流行樂壇最有創意也最成功的樂團之一。而主唱Don Henley更是主導整個The Eagles音樂方向的重要舵手。 50、60年代，那許維爾的WLAC電台以清晰且多樣化的音樂播放在氣氛絕佳的夜晚一點一滴地傳進Don Henley小小世界中。而奧克拉荷馬市KOMA電台以及知名主持人Wolfman Jack每晚的深夜節目從德州墨西哥的邊境傳出，跨越600公里傳入Henley小小的收音機裡，每晚他都將收音機放在被單下面，貼緊著耳朵傾聽直到凌晨時分。後來貓王崛起並帶來了Chuck Berry、Little Richard、Jerry Lee Lewis、Fats Domino、Bobby Freeman、Chuck Willis、Bobby Blue Bland等人的歌聲，而接下The Beatles的出現則讓Don Henley的生活從此改變。
高中時代Henley與朋友Richard Bowden、Jerry Surratt共組了他的第一個樂團The Four Seeds（後來改名為Shiloh），成員還包括了Jim Ed Norman（他和Henley在北德州大學認識，目前時華納唱片公司納許維爾的總裁）。1970年他們在獨立唱片公司Amos旗下發行了第一張專輯，而1971年的秋天他們組成了The Eagles，以融合鄉村、民謠、節奏藍調與流行樂帶出獨特且前衛的美國音樂風格。在他們長達10年的演唱生涯中，全球唱片銷售量不但超過一億，他們還贏得了4座葛萊美獎、5次專輯榜冠軍，也是歷史上第1個擁有兩張全美銷售量超過1000萬張專輯的團體。
其後Don Henley展開了個人演藝事業，成績一樣驚人。1982年時推出的個人首張專輯I Can't Stand Still以他在旋律上的天賦及歌詞中所傳遞的熱情信念、敏銳的社會政治觀點，使這張專輯成為當代最具代表性、最引人共鳴及最有音樂性的聲音。接下來於84年及89年推出的Building The Perfect Beast及The End Of The Innocence更讓他拿下葛萊美獎最佳搖滾男藝人的獎項。可惜的是Don Henley自1989年後就暫停了所有的演唱活動，並投身於環保工作當中。雖然在唱片公司缺席了將近10年之久，但是隨著時間的歷練Don Henley的音樂節奏、結構、情緒與內容方面更較以往平衡，並以一貫的特色推出2000年最新專輯Inside Job。
即使Don Henley目前忙於音樂事業中，他還是投注另一半的心力在環保與其他慈善事業上：促使加州潔淨水法案的通過、洛杉磯聖莫尼卡山野生動植物棲息地的保存、推動東德州公立學校與大學沼地科學研究機構與環境教育計劃的成立等。而他所推動的『華爾騰森林計劃』目前已經募集到2200萬美元以上，並以這筆鉅款來購買華爾騰森林週遭具有歷史價值與環保意義的土地。
