Thomas Otten is a countertenor, a male who sings with the range and quality of a female alto. Otten says his voice never broke at puberty, then he spent years of training to achieve a honeyed sound of incredible richness. He sings repertory from the baroque in his native France, but for this album he teams up with composer Frédéric Momont, who also performs orchestral/choral/groove duties on the keyboard. CLOSE TO SILENCE is an apt title for this intriguing musical creation. The sound is generally dark and atmospheric -- almost Zen like -- with a stately dignity that falls somewhere between spiritual fullness and cold oblivion. Most song lyrics are in an invented kind of Latin, but the spiritual, soul-searching intent is obvious. There are no lyrics or translations in the liner notes, but one song, "Underdown Aperture," is in English. Here the soul has no redemption; silence and the abyss are the only salvation. Otten’s unusually high voice can be lyrical and even playful, as on "Espiritu," but he often controls his tonal quality to be more penetrating, creating an amazingly pure and vibratory effect. At times, his voice seems to have been electronically altered, but this only enhances the musical effect. Because of these acoustic alterations -- and the angelic vocal layers provided by soprano Caroline Mutel -- my ears didn’t always focus just on Otten’s unusual voice, but were led into the beautiful depths of the music itself. Momont skillfully combines liturgical intent with subtle ambient grooves to create realistic orchestral and choral music from samples, while live soloists on cello and violins add more immediacy. On "Dulciate," Momont drapes his music over clever ambient groove tracks, then moves through a dynamic flurry of minimalist arpeggios. CLOSE TO SILENCE offers a rich and arresting experience that has me pushing the "play" button on my CD player over and over again. Brilliant. Carol Wright
