The title MI SUENO ("My Dream") doesn’t merely describe the dreamy quality of Ibrahim Ferrer’s music (although it certainly applies). Instead the title refers to the Cuban singer’s professional dream of recording an entire album of boleros--his favorite musical form. Ferrer, who was 78 years old when the project got underway, died before its completion, but demos he recorded for the remaining tracks were recovered and set to music. Those who know Ferrer’s singing from BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB and his subsequent solo releases will find his elegant, weathered vocals in fine form here. Tasteful work from some fine Cuban studio musicians (including the late Ruben Gonzalez, who appears on "Melodia del Rio") provides the perfect backdrop to Ferrer’s nuanced singing on these gorgeous, lilting songs of love. MI SUENO is a lovely, touching tribute to one of Cuba’s musical treasures.
