The Beatles  - 一隊二十世紀最偉大樂隊 - 他們的音樂對當時的社會是一種沖擊，啟發了隨後的樂隊。The Beatles由 John Lennon (1940年10月9日 - 1980年12月8日)、Paul McCartney (1942年6月18日 - )、George Harrison (1943年2月25日 - 2001年11月29日) 及 Ringo Starr (1940年7月7日 - ) 組成。

John 的母親是音樂啟蒙老師。在 John 的童年，她教 John 三絃琴，令他日後對結他有基本認識。當他踏入青年時代，他與同校的朋友組成樂隊 The Quarraymen。1957年的一個音樂節，Paul 與朋友觀看到 The Quarraymen 的表演。表演完畢後， Paul 經朋友介紹下認識了 John。他問 Paul 有沒有興趣加入，而第二日 Paul 便回覆他想加入。Paul 其後推薦了 George 加入。

George 與 Paul 當時就讀同一間學校，而且兩人住所很近，所以二人很好朋友。Paul 一次在一班夜班巴士上，叫 George 即席表演結他給 John。之後，George 便加入了。經過一段在歐洲等地的酒吧、會所作表演後，他們在利物浦的 The Cavern 會所作客。

這時，他們已經有一定的受歡迎程度，吸引了開設唱片店的 Brain Epstien 前來觀嘗。他被樂隊的現場表演及在台上的幽默感吸引，簽了樂隊當上其經理人。 Brain 為他們找來一些在唱片公司試音的機會。1961 年的元旦，他們就為 Decca 唱片公司試音，但 Decca 方面認為結他樂隊在市場上沒有吸引力，所以沒有與樂隊簽約。這並沒有令 Brain 放棄幫他們尋找與唱片公司簽約的機會，他將這次試音的錄音帶送給不同唱片公司。最後這錄音帶落在 EMI 唱片的一個監製 George Martin 手上，並安排了一次試音。
