既有重金属的铿锵，又似爵士乐那样随意，并具备交响乐般的气势，这就是独一无二的king crimson乐队。脱胎自英国艺术摇滚乐队Giles（后来叫Giles and Fripp).King Crimson 于1969年由吉他手Robert Fripp,鼓手Michael Giles 连同萨克斯管手Ian McDonald,低音吉他手Grey Lake 建立。首张专辑In the court of the crimson king 虽然在几个月内就先后在英美两地获得成功，但McDonald 和Giles 却对乐队的音乐取向和过多的演出不满决定离开，即使Fripp宁愿自己离队也不能使他们回心转意。结果Fripp是在大量客座乐手的帮助下完成了后面几张专辑In the wake of poseidon （1970）
lizard(1970)和Islands (1971).1972至74年间King Crimson形成了包括前yes乐队鼓手Bill Bruford 在内的最强阵容，并推出了lake’s tongues in aspic 等经典专辑。1975年Fripp开始作个人发展。1981至1984年乐队重组并发行了三张受舞曲风格影响的专辑。1994年再次重组，但除了演唱会现场录音外，只在1995发行过一张EP和2000年出了一张新专辑。与此同时，King Crimson的成员还往往用ProjeKcts乐队的名义作一些实验性的音乐尝试。
