影片开始时我们看到一位倒霉的出版社编辑威尔，他不光面临失业，更让他闹心的是自己的妻子竟然与他的同事斯托尔德有染。在漫天大雪中，他驾车行驶在郊外的路上，突遇一头黑狼的袭击。被咬伤的他，身心发生剧变：比以前更敏锐，脾气更暴躁，白天嗜睡，而晚上却野性爆发……这时，他上司的女儿劳拉给了他无微不至的关爱。在她看来，“狼人”威尔就像一只极需照顾的动物，如果不管他，就很可能变成一头野兽。
不久，威尔的前妻夏洛特被害。警方怀疑威尔。让劳拉感到意外的是，斯托尔德也出现在警署并不断追问威尔的下落。劳拉认为夏洛特系斯托尔德所杀。
