由英国吉他手Mick Jones、键盘兼吉他手Ian McDonald发起，陆续加入鼓手Dennis Elliott与三位美国籍团员∶主唱Lou Gramm、贝斯手Ed Gagliardi、键盘手Al Greenwood後，乐团在1976年正式成立於纽约，因为成员来自英美两国对彼此而言都是外国人，因此团名定为Foreigner。

外国人合唱团以刚劲的吉他与巧妙的键盘编排加上高亢宏亮的主唱歌声令他们在七○年代晚期一遍迪斯可流行风潮中得以异军突起，这种介於流行与重摇滚之间的曲风逐渐发展到八○年代是为成熟的AOR（Adult-Oriented Rock的缩写），所以外国人合唱团是AOR黄金时期最具代表性的团体之一。

1977年发行的首张同名专辑不仅令他们一炮而红同时也是该团最长寿的专辑，因此自有其历史意义。其中的三首单曲"Feels Like The First Time"、"Cold As Ice"和"Long, Long Way From Home"加上团员锺爱的"Starrider"都包含在最新精选之中。第二张专辑「Double Vision」趁胜追击，使外国人合唱团的人气居高不下，三首单曲"Hot Blooded"、标题曲"Double Vision"和中板抒情的"Blue Morning, Blue Day"也都入选精选辑内。原始六位团员对第三张专辑「Head Games」都不甚满意，认为它没有超越前作，但就商业成绩而言仍然相当可观，其中代表单曲是"Dirty White Boy"。

团员缩编成四人（Jones、Gramm、Elliott与新贝斯手Rick Wills）後发行的第四张专辑「4」是该团登峰造极之作，在专辑榜拿下十周冠军，其中包括抒情名作"Waiting For A Girl Like You"，还有"Urgent"、"Break It Up"、"Juke Box Hero"共四首单曲。"I Want To Know What Love Is"、"That Was Yesterday"、"Down On Love"都选自第五张专辑「Agent Provocateur」，"I Want To Know┅"是外国人合唱团唯一且在大西洋两岸同获冠军的单曲。

因为主唱Lou Gramm於1987年初发行个人专辑而解散谣言满天飞的外国人合唱团在同年圣诞节发行第六张专辑「Inside Information」而使歌迷大感意外但还是同样捧场，依然造就了三首单曲∶"Say You Will"、"I Don’t Want To Live Without You"、"Heart Turns To Stone"。
