  —  Over the years I have owned several copies of Mike OLDFIELD’s classic debut album "Tubular Bells" which I am sure all of you have in your collection as well. I actually only re-purchased it on HDCD recently which brings new color to this classic recording which is also one of my all time favorite albums. I still find it hard to believe that this album was mostly conceived and performed by 1 person. A youthful OLDFIELD performs a vast array of instrumentation here with a list too long to capture here but each instrument brings forward a different feel into the album and of course the classic countdown in Part 1 to the climax of "Tubular Bells" is one of the most anticipated parts of the album.

    For my opinion it is the bestest of all Tubular Bells because it takes you down to the shadows of your deepest secrets. It can make you smile, cry, dance, worry and even thqat music can pure your heart. Powerful music, intelligent guitar play. Hey, it’s Mike Oldfield you know. Fans - buy it. Others - discover it!
    Maybe you deserve Tubular Bells 2, but think... does it deserve you!?

—  Forget the “brand name” on this outing, it’s different in many ways to TB and TB2. For a start, there’s a song on it “Man in the rain”, delightfully sung by Cara from Polar Star. Her voice is very similar to Maggie Reilly, so the track sounds similar to “To France” and “Moonlight shadow”.
    While there’s a continuity to the album which you would expect from Oldfield, the tracks are individual pieces of music in their own right. The themes are strong, with the climactic “Far above the clouds” providing a superb ending.
    It took me a while to appreciate this album. In many ways the marketing ploy of using the TB name works against it, as it offers misleading expectations and invites unnecessary comparisons, but the album is one of Oldfield’s best recordings.

—  Unlike the previous sequels to “Tubular Bells”, such as “Tubular Bells 2” and “The Millennium Bell”, this is a straight reworking of the original album. Oldfield has apparently always been conscious of what he considered to be the shortcomings performance and production wise, of the original album. He therefore returned to the studio and remade the album in its entirety. The result is what sounds like "A tribute to Tubular Bells”. The original album may well have had its flaws, but in many ways, that was part of its appeal. Listening to “2003”, it is difficult to avoid constantly comparing this new recording with the one we are all so familiar with. Yes, the performance on “2003” is impeccable, the sound is crystal clear, and the music of course is excellent. I think however, I will be sticking with the recording I already know and love, warts and all. (John Cleese is an excellent master of ceremonies.)

—  Personally, I would have said that the “essential” Mike Oldfield would include “Tubular Bells”, “Ommadawn”, and “The songs of distant earth” in full. Let’s however take the title with a pinch of salt, and see this as “An introduction to Mike Oldfield”.
    On that basis, it’s pretty good. The selected excerpts from the early albums have appeared before on other compilations (“Elements” or “The Complete..”) in exactly the same format. On the other hand, as this album was released before “Tubular Bells III”, the last track is a working version of the section that became “The source of secrets”.

    就个人而言,我认为Mike Oldfield的精华全包含在"Tubular Bells","Ommadawn"和"The songs of distant earth"这几张专辑里,我们很风趣的称之为"Mike Oldfield制造".
    在以上原则中选择出来的片段是最棒的.选自他以前的作品集.另外一方面,此作最后放弃了于之前Tubular Bells III中最后一首的片段接壤,使得这张专辑为更神秘.
