九首德文咏叹调
      很少亨德尔的声乐名作是以德语歌词创作的，多半他都是以意大利文和英文剧本创作，这与他生涯多半在意大利和英国有关，也和当时英国流行意大利歌剧有关，德语在这些国家的音乐界在当时都还是相对弱势的语种，因此并不受到重视和欢迎。这套作品是他在伦敦的头十年间的创作，时间是一七二四到二七年间。这九首咏叹调一致采用德国参议员兼诗人布洛克斯（Brthold Brockes）的诗作，内容则是歌颂上帝创造大自然的恩惠，歌诵大自然之美。亨德尔本人和布洛克斯是打学生时代的旧识，虽然日后分居英德，却还是常有书信往来，亨德尔这套咏叹调是将九首咏叹调当成一套完整连续的作品来创作，而且生前整套作品也都没有出版，显然是应布洛克斯的某种需求而创作，而为被布洛克斯私人所收藏。这九首咏叹调在型式上采用意大利歌剧咏叹调的风格，是亨德尔非常特别的抒情咏叹调，它很少采用华丽的花腔，而是以非常歌唱性格的旋律舒缓地进行。

Among Handel's vocal works - from the early, operatic solo cantatas to the full-blown operas and the oratorios of his London years - the Nine German Arias hold a special place. Possibly composed around the time that the composer made a final journey to Germany to take leave of his ailing mother, they were Handel's last settings of texts in his native language. It seems likely that these circumstances contributed to the intimate character of these highly personal works, in combination with the texts themselves. Barthold Heinrich Brockes' poems point ahead towards the Enlightenment, establishing as their setting a harmonically organised world, in which benevolent Nature is the prime example of God's bounty. Emma Kirkby has chosen to combine these arias with the much earlier Gloria, discovered in 2001 and given its première recording - by Emma Kirkby herself - in the same year. As a result of the smaller forces (two violins, cello and chamber organ) employed on this re-recording of the exuberant work, the performance has a more intimate atmosphere, giving an interesting perspective on a piece which although written 300 years ago, is still a new addition to the repertoire. Emma Kirkby and London Baroque share a musical relationship of long standing, and appear together on two previous Handel recordings on BIS. The recent 'Handel in Italy', a programme of early, secular solo cantatas, was highly praised by the reviewers, for instance in the German magazine Fono Forum: 'Emma Kirkby presents these pieces with a deep insight into human thought and feeling. her interaction with London Baroque is an impressive demonstration of how a common musical understanding has matured and strengthened throughout a collaboration of many years.' An earlier disc of 'Sacred Cantatas' also received a number of distinctions, including a 'BBC Music Choice' in BBC Music Magazine, whose reviewer had 'seldom been as moved by a recording, both music and performance.'

Originally, Emma Kirkby had no expectations of becoming a professional singer. As a classics student at Oxford and then a schoolteacher she sang for pleasure in choirs and small groups, always feeling most at home in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. She joined the Taverner Choir in 1971 and in 1973 began her long association with the Consort of Musicke. In seeking a sound appropriate for early instruments she had enormous help from Jessica Cash in London, and from the directors, fellow singers and instrumentalists with whom she has worked over the years. Emma Kirkby feels privileged to have been able to build long-term relationships with chamber groups and orchestras, in particular London Baroque, the Freiburger Barockorchester, L’Orfeo (of Linz) and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, as well as with some of the younger groups – the Palladian Ensemble and Florilegium.

Her BIS recordings include Handel motets and Christmas music by Scarlatti, Bach and others with London Baroque, the first recording of the newly-rediscovered Gloria by Handel with the Royal Academy Baroque Orchestra, songs by the American composer Amy Beach with the Romantic Chamber Group of London, and the anthology ‘Classical Kirkby’, devised and performed with Anthony Rooley. In 1999 Emma Kirkby was voted Artist of the Year by Classic FM Radio listeners, and in November 2000 she received the Order of the British Empire.

London Baroque
London Baroque was formed in 1978 and is regarded worldwide as one of the foremost exponents of baroque chamber music, enabling its members to devote their professional lives to the group. A regular fifty or so performances a year has given the group a cohesion and professionalism akin to that of a permanent string quartet. The ensemble’s repertoire spans a period from the end of the sixth century up to Mozart and Haydn, with works of virtually unknown composers next to familiar masterpieces of the baroque and early classical eras. London Baroque is a regular visitor to many important European festivals and has appeared on television in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Holland, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Estonia and Japan. The core members of the ensemble are Ingrid Seifert and Richard Gwilt (violins), Charles Medlam (cello & viola da gamba) and Steven Devine (harpsichord & organ).
