01 "Adieu"
French composer Paul Sauvanet uses a chamber string orchestra as a cushion of
tenderness on which to set his lyric ideas. He plays the melodic lines himself
using digital samples of traditional orchestra instruments: harp, flute, oboe,
and the arch-Romantic timbre of a distant French horn. On "Adieu," written after
the death of his mother, the nearly Mozartian opening gives way to Mahlerian
pastoral hints, with the sounds of harp, horn and oboe singing out. (from Tristesse

02 "Minor Blue"
A rhapsodic, moving piece by American cellist DAVID DARLING. Luminescent string
lines in a minor mode breathe over a sustained plucked cello arpeggio. This music

03 "White Wings"
Norwegian composer Oystein Sevag has been building a personal style for years
with a memorable series of beautifully crafted albums. "White Wings" features
an original melody that sounds as Celtic in inflection and emotion as the famous
Londonderry Air, played with great poignancy by the String Quartet and voice

04 "Recuerdos de la Alhambra"
Born in Rome, Los Angeles-based flamenco guitarist Gino D’Auri studied classical
guitar in his teens until he was traumatized by flamenco, which became the center
of his musical life. His unorthodox inverted version of this famous classical
guitar study by 19th century Spanish guitarist/composer Francisco Tarrega showcases
his five-finger tremolo technique, and is supported by a subtle keyboard and string

05 "The Perfect Flaw"
06 "Riverine"
Tim Story plies his intensely personal style from the small town of Maumee, Ohio.
His compositions have been characterized as graceful, visceral chamber music for
21st century romantics. Story describes his approach as a kind of desperate serenity,
and his work is often compared to ironic miniaturists like 20th century French
composer Eric Satie, but the effect goes well beyond simple oxymorons. (from The

07 "Sky 7"
Toronto composer Mychael Danna has been delighting film audiences with his scores
for Atom Egoyan and other offbeat directors for years. Recent projects have included
The Ice Storm and The Sweet Hereafter. But his most beautiful and subtly orchestrated
music was inspired by the unrelenting monochromatic greyness of the Canadian winter
skies. Danna calls his approach ’orchestral romantic minimalism.’ "Sky 7" is a heart-
rending neo-Celtic melody for flutes, strings and synthesizers.

08 "Heaven in a Wild Flower"
Canadian-born composer, keyboard and bassoon virtuoso Bill Douglas now lives, teaches
and creates his original music in Boulder, Colorado. His lovely choral setting of
William Blake’s famous "Heaven in a Wild Flower" is performed by the ARS NOVA SINGERS,
conducted by Thomas Morgan. Douglas brings some of Blake’s most evocative images to life
with sublime melodies and subtle harmonies that combine the ideals of Renaissance vocal

09 "Land of the Angel"
Paul Sauvanet returns with the lush romantic centerpiece from his album Nomad. "Land of
the Angel" is another subtly orchestrated adagio which takes flight on the astonishingly
beautiful voice of soprano Claude Hermine Huguenel. The obvious comparison is to the work
of Polish composer Henrick Gorecki. Sauvanet views our modern multicultural landscape with

10 "Shabbes"
Kol Simcha is a Swiss ensemble of five virtuoso classical and jazz players, masters of
the achingly poignant klezmer ballad. Shabbes, with its dynamic contrasts and characteristic
Jewish melodies presents a gorgeous interplay of clarinet, piano, bass, percussion and the

11 "Ocean Without Shores"
The special talent of California electronic classical composer Constance Demby is translating
the tradition of sacred music into a 21st century context. In 1986 critics wrote of her Novus
Magnificat "There is no other recording in the electronic genre that is so heartfelt, so devout
...You will be moved." "Ocean Without Shores" from her 1995 album Aeterna, is a passionate,
tumultuous waltz with cascading piano arpeggios in the romantic concerto style full of courage,

12 "Joy of Forgiveness"
Hawaii-based composer Raphael closes the compilation on a note of inner peace and harmony.
On "Joy of Forgiveness" he plays the Mason & Hamlin BB grand piano in the classic romantic
concerto style of Rachmaninoff, embellished with strings, chorus, and some of his most
